I haven't had a successful piece of art in a long time.
Lately, it seems, I'm just not quite "getting it."
My work doesn't fulfill assignment requirements,
Doesn't get the message across,
Doesn't communicate well
AT.
ALL.
I'm becoming incredibly frustrated with my work.
How will I succeed in my major and the art world if my work sucks? If I'm only average?
Average won't get me anywhere.
Someone help.
What should I be thinking about for the future?
Money?
Happiness?
Connections to people?
Celebration?
What should be the primary focus??
And does all this really matter in the long run?

weird... I'm feeling the SAME. EXACT. WAY.
ReplyDeleteI'm in it for me... I know there are specific requirements and blah blah blah but why can't we just create the artwork we want to create.
I'm better at painting and pastels... couldn't give a damn about illustrator.
We'll rock it girl. Just do what they ask now... but still put YOU into it... we'll kill em with our real stuff later!
Ahhh yay! Thanks for replying, I'm glad someone else is feeling the same way!
ReplyDeleteI think you need to reevaluate your definition of what makes a piece of your work "successful." if you are so focused on pleasing your professors that you sacrifice something that makes you happy, then you'll never be satisfied. I understand your frustration, we've all been there at one point. We all need to accept the fact that we have our strengths and our weaknesses in different media. Most importantly, however, we need to remember we're here to learn. Don't worry so much about the future now, just focus on developing as an artist. You're clearly talented and have a passion for what you are doing, I just think you need to step back, reassess, and transform your worried energy into great artwork. Don't drive yourself crazy your first semester (you have lots more time for that).
ReplyDelete(Sorry if you feel I'm creeping on your post with possibly unhelpful life advice. Just trying to help a girl out).
Hey, it's very common to feel really unsettled and unsure of yourself when you begin the program. What is key is to keep trying your hardest, take crit, use it, be flexible, and optimistic, ask questions. Your professors will notice if you are working through it and that is one of the most important things freshmen year. You have to work through the bad ideas before you get to the good ones. Come to the studio anytime, Justin and I would be glad to give you preliminary crits and give you ideas and advice.
ReplyDelete(Just came back to this after a while and wanted to thank you all!)
